Most people find out they have a hole in their heart and get it fixed in a few months. But I am special so it took two years.
The story begins: I was about five months pregnant with Devyn at a regular Dr appointment when Dr Mooney asked if I had ever been told I had a heart murmur, in fact I had. Dr Brich and Dr Sanders had both said I had a small murmur when I was pregnant with Kym. They both called it a pregnancy murmur a lot of women have them "your heart is just working harder cause it is pumping blood to the baby." Dr Mooney wanted to get it checked out, cause it was not a small murmur any more. This is the one time that I was thankful I didn't lose the baby weight HAHAHA. Because I was over weight and pregnant my heart was working like crazy.
So November 11, 2006 I went to see the heart Dr. I can not think of his name now. Anyways my Aunt Kaelyn works for him when he comes to Panguitch and Richfield. Lew and I went to the hospital that morning and found out that I was only scheduled for a consultation with Dr _________. Aunt Kaelyn knew that Dr Mooney had wanted me to have an echo cardiogram (echo), she is great, she talked to the nurses and the fit me in right then. The funny thing is Lewis was interviewing at the hospital that day for a job. My appointment was suppose to be later in the day so he could go to the interview and then go with me to the echo. Well when they just fit me in his interview was at the same time as my echo. I know that he didn't do very well on the interview cause he was worried about me. I know this cause he didn't get the job.
One of the nurses listened to my heart "yup sounds like a pregnancy murmur" I remember thinking- "Just a pregnancy murmur, but hey I will get to see my heart. I wish Lew was in here he loves stuff like this." They did the Echo and I have to say they were very professional, next they did a bubble test. A little explaining:
Echo cardiogram- is a ultra sound on the heart (with the echo they couldn't see that I had a hole it looked like a had some loose skin between two of my chambers.
Bubble test- is where they hook you up to an IV and pump some saline into your heart. I know it sounds like something that would kill you, but it didn't. This showed where the hole was and approximately how big.
The nurses had told me that I had a hole in my heart and the Dr would be in shortly to talk to me about it. He came in with two other Dr's. One was an intern and the other was a Dr helping out that day. All three listened to my heart and then he told me that I should thank my Aunt and Dr Mooney cause he would have listened to that and not done the Echo. One of the things I do remember is he kept shaking his head like he couldn't believe that he would have been wrong.
We went into a room and by this time Lew had joined us. The Dr told us a whole bunch of stuff and I can't remember any of it. He told me to call a few months after the baby was born and I would go in and get it fixed. I do remember saying that depending on if it was a PFO or an ASD that would determine how they took care of it. Needless to say I went home scared to death. I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. Oh wait that is exactly what I did.
If this is not boring you to death tune in later for part two of the story.
